5 Mixes: Starkey / dÉbruit / Alex B / Harmonic 313 / Greena

1: Starkey mix for FACT

I wasn’t a fan of Starkey’s ‘Gutter Music’ album, although I hear his sophmore offering is a lot better. I wasn’t too sure about listening to this mix for FACT but I was happily surprised. Lots of heavy hitting tracks here and a really lush remix of Bon Iver to round things off.

2. dÉbruit mix for FACT

I reckon I’ll just stop doing this blog and just post a link to the new FACT mix each week. French synth-funkster dÉbruit drops a dirty, soulful set that slides gracefully from Kurtis Blow through to Dorian Concept.

3. Alex B mix for Brainfeeder

Kings of left-field instrumental hip-hop (can’t we just call it wonky?) Brainfeeder post up their latest podcast mixed by Alex B. I have no idea who he is, but he seems to have been doing alright for himself without any notice from me. Loads of great tracks from himself alongside Viktor Vaughn, AFTA-1 and Dibia$e.

4. Harmonic 313 on Viral Radio

It’s not really a mix, but Mark Ptichard (AKA Harmonic 313) drops by Viral Radio to play some new tracks from himself and Africa Hi-Tech (Harmonic313 + Steve Spacek) and to talk a little about his music.

5: Greena mix for Ballers 5ocial Club

I’ve done almost none of the work that I was meant to do today so… Here’s a link to Greena’s mix for Glasgow’s ‘Ballers 5ocial Club’ over at Sonic Router. Lots of good stuff in here from Joy Orbison, L-Vis 1990, Martin Kemp etc.

Bleep.com Previews Hyperdub “5”

Posted in Music with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 5, 2009 by REAL BAD
hypheader450Bleep.com have announced the full vinyl tracklisting for Hyperdub’s fifth anniversary compilation “5”, complete with audio clips of all the tracks
Five vinyl EPs will be released, one a week, in the run up to the release of a double CD compilation. Importantly, the double CD will feature all the tracks present on the vinyl EPs… and more! Which is good, cause I can’t see any Burial on those vinyls.
And who are Black Chow? The track is called “Purple Smoke” which hints at Joker and his gang, but there are plenty of other top-secret Hyperdub collabs rumoured (Burial+FlyLo, FlyLo+Joker) that could fit the bill…

Ras G – Cosmic Tones 4 Mental Therapy

Posted in Music with tags , , , , , , , , on June 29, 2009 by REAL BAD

Ethereal mix from Brainfeeder’s Ras G. If it wasn’t so HOT right now I’d recommend listening to this in the bath. Instead, it might just take your mind off the fact that the office you’re working in has no air conditioning.

Oh, and this is the tracklisting, as written by Ras G

“GB, Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawke, Kutmah, Matthew David,Smegma,Mono/Poly,Misel Quitno,Peter B,Professor Cantloupe, La Voz Sabia De Los Cosmos,

Dorian Concept + FlyLo jam at Brainfeeder London

Posted in Live, Music with tags , , , , , , , , , , on June 23, 2009 by REAL BAD

Brainfeeder London was easily the best live event I’ve been to this year. You might have seen me on the door collecting tickets and stamping hands but I got inside to see Gaslamp Killer, Flying Lotus, Dorian Concept and Joker. Pity I missed Samiyam, cause I heard that he killed it. For me, Dorian was the highlight of the night. I’m not sure if I imagined it or not but I think the kid started rocking out a little too hard and tried (and failed) to play his keyboard with his face. Anyway, here’s a video of him jamming with Fly Lo and some guy on the guitar (who was that?)

Four Mixes For Free

Posted in Music with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on June 9, 2009 by REAL BAD

I’ve got such a massive back-log of stuff to post and it seems like I’m getting less and less time to turn it out. So, here’s a mega-post of four mixes which have been getting me all excited over the past week or so…

Nosaj Thing & D-Styles for Low End Theory

Low End Theory, Rinse.fm, Brainfeeder, Fact Magazine are all podcasts which you should be subscribed to if you know what’s good for you. So if you haven’t heard this mix already you should just get on iTunes and subscribe away. But, incase you’re not that way inclined, here’s a direct link to the MP3. I remember D-Styles from back in the day on his message board and his album ‘Phantazmagorea’; an all-scratch album beaten only by Ricci Rucker & Mike Boo’s ‘Scetchbook”. Nosaj Thing’s recent release ‘Drift’ is killing it at the moment too. This mix is crammed with slung-back ominous head-nodding that’ll keep you wondering what the names of all those amazing tracks are…

Bok Bok for LuckyMe

Anything LuckyMe touches turns to gold, so it’s unsurprising that when they start fooling around with DJ/producer Bok Bok that we’re in for a fun ride.

Kyle Hall for Fact Magazine

When I did an image search for his name I got some shots of a football player and some gay porn. If there was any real method to how Google does what it does then surely this kid would be number 1 on every search because he’s so damn talented. Hailed as a Detroit-house prodigy, this 18 year old has gained the respect of some of the biggest names in the genre. This mix would sound fantastic at 3am in a sweaty basement club or at 3pm in the garden with a beer. More summer please.

Fact Magazine have an interview with Kyle and are hosting the mix for the next 3 weeks or so.

Simbad for Brainfeeder

I don’t really know much about Simbad. I know he’s from London. This mix for Brainfeeder grafts hip-hop, house and techno all together along with a big helping of synths to give a spacey sounding blend which seems to define the Brainfeeder sound.

Take Brainfeeder Mix

Posted in Music with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on May 27, 2009 by REAL BAD

Flying Lotus has posted a new mix by Brainfeeder comrade Take, titled ‘The Brain Stays Fed’. Any mix which starts with Floating Points’ “K&G Beat” is guaranteed to get my attention, and I’m glad that this mix did. Other artists featured on the mix include Paul White, Martyn, 2tall, Mr. Beatnik, Griffi and Fulgeance. Highly recommended.

FEED YOUR BRAIN

As a bonus, here’s Take’s remix of Flying Lotus’ “Parisian Goldfish” which will feature on the soon-to-be-released “L.A. EP 3×3”
